Carbon management comes to the service sector

A new mandatory carbon reporting and trading scheme for major non-industrial organisations promises not only to be an important new market in compliance but also a major opportunity for environmental consultancies in the UK to grow their carbon management services in overseas markets. Geraint Roberts reports on how consultancies and their clients are gearing up for the Carbon Reduction Commitment.

Cutting carbon dioxide emissions is about to reach the mainstream. From next year some 20,000 public and private organisations across the UK, from local authorities, government departments, schools and universities to retailers, banks and hotel chains, must provide the Government with data on their CO2 emissions. Of these, the biggest emitters – some 5,000 organisations – will then go on to participate in an emissions trading scheme and be required to ensure they do not exceed an annually shrinking cap on their emissions, set by the Government.
