Recession spurs interest in resource efficiency

A combination of falling revenues and increasing costs for energy and waste disposal are strengthening, at long last, the business case for resource efficiency services. Geraint Roberts reports on consultancies’ efforts to convince clients to look seriously at optimising water, energy and materials usage and at intensifying waste minimisation

Environmental consultancies are cautiously optimistic that, finally, the time has come to sell resource efficiency to a wider range of clients and on an ongoing basis. As clients have redoubled their focus on the bottom line during the last nine months the business case for resource efficiency – and energy efficiency in particular – has grown, both in the UK and globally. As economies pull out of recession, consultancies are hopeful that company boards will continue to back programmes that find new ways to rein in resource consumption.
