Environmental consulting loses gusto as recession hits

The environmental consultancy sector is experiencing its first major brake on growth since it began two decades ago to ride the wave of environmental protection and management, according to ground-breaking research conducted by Environment Analyst. Liz Trew presents key findings

The total UK market for environmental consulting services grew by 9% in 2008 to reach revenues of £1.46 million, according to Environment Analyst’s first annual survey of the sector. Although 9% represents a healthy increase, it nevertheless indicates that the environmental consultancy sector grew more slowly last year than it did in preceding years. The sector achieved compound average growth of 13% per annum for the period 2004-07. Environment Analyst forecasts severely-depressed growth in 2009, with the sector likely to expand by low single-digits at best.
