Shipping sector could cut carbon emissions by 30% at no cost, says DNV

The global shipping industry could reduce its carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 simply through implementing measures that would save operators money, says Norwegian-owned consultancy DNV. Furthermore, the industry could slash emissions by 60% if it pursued all “identified measures”. The short-term solution to cutting shipping emissions is switching to liquefied natural gas (LNG), argues DNV, in a report entitled Pathway to Low Carbon Shipping. Such a shift would also offer significant air quality benefits, virtually eliminating ships' sulphur dioxide emissions and cutting their nitrous oxide emissions by 85-90%.
