Since privatisation in the mid-1990s, AEA has streamlined its operations from over 20 separate business units with expertise across a wide range of areas - many related to its roots in the nuclear sector - to focus on the environmental and climate change consulting business. The legacy from AEA's public sector origins has resulted in strong ties with the UK government. The last two years have seen AEA focus efforts on winning major US federal government climate and energy policy and programme management contracts, while its commitment to the North American market has been further underlined with the October 2010 purchase of ERG.
