SgurrEnergy wins Infinis wind contract
Renewable electricity generator Infinis has chosen SgurrEnergy as its technical advisor during construction of Glenkerie wind farm, near Biggar in southern Scotland. Services provided by SgurrEnergy will include environmental management. Commenting on the contract win, SgruggEnergy engineering group manager, Alasdair Miller, said: “Being selected for this project demonstrates the wealth of SgurrEnergy’s construction supervision capabilities. Delivery of such projects reinforces our position at the forefront of technical advisor expertise worldwide”. The Glenkerie wind farm is financed by Lloyds and BNP Paribas and will comprise 11 turbines with a combined capacity of up to 22MW. It is due to begin operations next year. -

Aecom wins US Navy solar power framework
A partnership between Aecom and Solar Power Partners (SPP) has been awarded an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity – or framework – contract with the US Naval Facilities Engineering Command. The one-year contract (with options for up to four additional years) will see Aecom-SPP work together to develop “solar power installations” at naval and marine corps sites in the American states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. Under the terms of the partnership, Aecom will provide engineering, procurement and construction services, while SPP will finance and own the solar power systems. Four other companies also won places on the framework contract, which has a total potential value of $100 million. -

Scott Wilson buys Australian rail consultancy
Less than a month after Scott Wilson was itself acquired, by URS Corporation after the latter outbid C2HM Hill (Environment Analyst 01-Jul-10), Scott Wilson has announced that it has purchased an Australian consultancy specialising in railway operational planning and network capacity assessments. Based in Melbourne, Systemwide Pty Ltd has annual revenue in the region of £1.7 million (AU$3m). The purchase is the outcome of a “strong working relationship over the last five years” between Systemwide and Scott Wilson's Australian team. Commenting on the acquisition Scott Wilson says that Systemwide's “office in the centre of Melbourne further complements Scott Wilson’s business plans of growing its rail and transport infrastructure consultancy business in the vibrant Victorian market”. -

Frazer-Nash wins UK nuclear new build work
Horizon Nuclear Power, a joint venture between RWE npower and E.ON UK, has chosen Frazer-Nash to provide regulatory and licensing services to support Horizon's efforts to building and operate new nuclear power stations in the UK by 2025. A five-year framework contract and “three significant work packages” awarded to Frazer-Nash represents “the start of a long term strategic partnership”, says the consultancy. Work will focus initially on assisting Horizon with site licence applications for new power stations at Oldbury, Glos and Wylfa, on Anglesey. Commenting, Frazer-Nash business manager Paul Deeran said: “Frazer-Nash now has significant involvement in the development of the UK’s next generation of nuclear power stations, and these contracts complement our ongoing work for the Health and Safety Executive on the Generic Design Assessment, which is considering the options for nuclear reactor design.” -

Spain's Eptisa wins Serbian landfill contract
Madrid-based consultancy Eptisa has been chosen to prepare a feasibility study, conceptual design, project implementation plan and action plan detailing the training needs of local staff for a new landfill site planned for the Serbian region of Valjevo. The new landfill will be designed to serve a population of 440,000 in an area currently without “an appropriate sanitary landfill”. Serbian's national waste management strategy foresees 24 regional landfills, of which 12 are to be built by 2012 and the remainder by 2019. The new Valjevo landfill will be the ninth to be built, with funding for feasibility and other “necessary documentation” provided by Spain. Eptisa's 2009 revenue included €166 million from engineering-based services, including consultancy. The company employs more than 1,600 staff and 35% of its revenue is derived from work outside Spain. -

AEA launches sustainable construction service
A bespoke design and specification review for new buildings and refurbishment projects aimed at both commercial and public bodies has been unveiled by AEA. The review covers all relevant aspects of energy efficiency and renewable energy, materials selection, water use, sustainable drainage, waste and ecology. The company already provides a range of 'green building' services, including building modelling, energy performance certificates, display energy certificates, SAP calculation, Breeam and Code for Sustainable Homes assessments. -

Atkins wins 6 Scottish Water framework contracts
Places on six framework contracts to supply “strategic support services” to Scottish Water, representing a combined value of approximately £2.5 billion, have been won by Atkins. The contracts cover the 2010-2015 period and will require Atkins staff to provide services related to: asset performance and business planning; non-infrastructure design; water infrastructure design; wastewater infrastructure design; wastewater modelling; and dams and reservoirs. Commenting on Scottish Water's ambitions over the coming five years, asset and investment manager Ken Hutchison said: “Scottish Water is embarking on a £2.5 billion investment programme, which is, per household, one of the largest in the UK water industry. It is our aim during this investment programme to ... put Scottish Water on a par with the best in the UK water industry". -

Amec, Balfour Beatty & Areva win Sellafield 'highly active effluent' contract
A partnership between three firms – Amec, Balfour Beatty and Areva – has been awarded a contract to define, design and cost a new “highly active effluent facility” earmarked for construction at Sellafield nuclear park in Cumbria. The aim of the two-year “early contractor engagement phase” contract is to lay foundations for the procurement, construction and commissioning of a facility capable of storing safely radioactive wastes arising from nuclear processing. Improving the safety of radioactive waste storage at Sellafield is a key priority of the nuclear park's decommissioning and management strategies. Current storage arrangements have been the subject of repeated criticism from NGOs. According to Amec the new facility will include “a series of high integrity highly active storage tanks in a seismically qualified reinforced concrete building”. -

Just Ecology updates East Midlands priority habitats inventory
Biodiversity data for the East Midlands region is being captured, collated and processed by niche consultancy Just Ecology as part of a Natural England-funded project to update the region's priority habitat inventories that form part of the UK biodiversity action plan (BAP) and that are also used to assess the progress of agri-environment schemes. The revised regional habitat inventory will emphasise, in particular, coastal flood plain, grazing marsh, fens, lowland heathland, reed bed, purple moor grass and rush pasture habitats. -
