Jacobs team in Reading leads on Saudi Arabian contract
Jacobs Engineering has won a three year contract with power and utility company Marafiq to act as project management contractor for Marafiq's activities in Saudi Arabia. Jacobs' Reading-based team will lead on the contract, with assistance from Jacobs staff in Mumbai. The work will focus on a series of projects in the Al Jubail and Yanbu industrial cities, including upgrades to wastewater treatment plants, electricity generation installations and a seawater reverse osmosis facility. Masterplanning and “conceptual studies” will also form part of the contract. -

AEA advises O2 on CRC
Mobile phone company O2 has employed AEA Technology to help it prepare for participation in incoming UK climate change legislation, the carbon reduction commitment (CRC) energy efficiency scheme. Having already undertaken an “assessment of O2's liabilities under the CRC” as well as an appraisal of opportunities for lower energy costs and an improved reputation, AEA will work with O2 to “prepare all the necessary data required for registration under the scheme”. AEA says it is working with more than 20 clients on CRC-related issues. The consultancy is also CRC “principal technical advisor” to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the government department overseeing implementation of the scheme. -

Arcadis wins European enviro services framework from ExxonMobil
Dutch-based consultancy Arcadis has signed a five-year framework agreement with Esso Beligum, a division of ExxonMobil, paving the way for it to provide environmental services in ten European nations. Many of the services covered by the agreement relate to the investigation, risk assessment and remediation of contaminated land at Esso-owned sites, including retail petrol stations, refineries, chemical plants and other production and distribution facilities. Commenting on the deal, Arcadis' Michiel Jaski said: "This important multi-country agreement will potentially generate a substantial amount of work for Arcadis. We were selected by ExxonMobil based on our ability to deliver services in different geographies, our strong technical capabilities and our performance and commitment in the area of health and safety". The countries covered by the agreement are: Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Austria, Ireland and Switzerland. -

Parsons Corp wins US Army in Europe 'green' land management contract
California-based engineering giant Parsons Corporation has won an “indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity” contract with the European division of the US Army Corp of Engineers. The contract is for one year, with an option to renew for up to four years. It requires Parsons to support the US Army's land management programme in Europe, which “is an essential part of the Army’s commitment to environmental stewardship,” says Parsons. The US Army is seeking to combine environmental stewardship principles with existing training land and conservation management practices to “ensure that Army lands remain viable”. Parsons has assisted the US Army in managing its European training land since 1998 and is also “the prime contractor” for the US Army's sustainable range programme, which supports 37 active duty, reserve and national guard installations in the USA, Hawaii and Germany. -

Merger of enviro service firms in south east USA
North Carolina-based engineering and environmental services firm, S&ME, has announced the purchase of Atlanta-based QORE Inc. S&ME was founded in 1973 and offers a range of services that include contaminated land remediation, water course restoration and landfill engineering. The acquisition of QORE brings its total number of staff to almost 1,000, based from 28 offices in the US south eastern states. Describing the acquisition as a “major expansion”, S&ME president Randy Neuhaus said that it “increases our powerhouse lineup of respected professionals to take on today’s emerging engineering and environmental sustainability challenges”. This is S&ME's fifth – and largest - acquisition in a decade. -

WYG contributes to sustainable redevelopment of Barnard Castle
White Young Green's (WYG) engineering division has won a contract to provide mechanical and electrical design services for the redevelopment of Witham Hall in Barnard Castle, County Durham. One of the project's priorities will be to deliver an expanded space with low operating costs and which is “exemplary in energy conservation”, says WYG.
