Defra hires WYG to present business case for EMS use by SMEs

White Young Green (WYG) has been chosen by the UK environment ministry, Defra, to collect data on the financial and environmental benefits accrued by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) following formal adoption of environmental management systems (EMSs). WYG will also seek to identify drivers for EMS take-up by SMEs. The aim of the project is to provide greater evidence about the business care for EMS use by smaller organisations, which can then be employed by public sector bodies to encourage a larger number of SMEs to consider adopting an accredited EMS. All SMEs that participate in the research will receive a free site visit by a WYG consultant “who will draw up an accurate picture of the benefits of their EMS. The firms will be able use this information in their marketing and communications,” explains WYG's sustainability director Steve Piltz.

Greenstone Carbon signs deal with French consultancy Zen'to

A partnership between London-based carbon management specialists Greenstone Carbon and French environmental consultancy Zen'to has been announced, setting the stage for Greenstone's proprietary carbon accounting software to be used by Zen'to clients as they seek to comply with France's incoming carbon tax and mandatory carbon reporting legislation. Commenting on the agreement, Zen'to managing director Laurent Molinari said: “Given the anticipated French national carbon tax due to come into force this year, there is already increased interest and focus on carbon management across French businesses. Complying with these regulations ... will become increasingly challenging to manage using spreadsheet-based approaches. More sophisticated software systems will be needed to ensure efficiency and compliance... We believe that the accounting rigour and ... the flexibility and integration capability makes Greenstone’s Acco2unt software an ideal solution for our clients in France.”
