Developing Historic Landfills
27 February at 10-12:00 GMT, Online event
It's reported that there are around 20,000 “historic landfills” in the UK. Many of these were frequently unlined with no leachate management and inadequate records of the waste they contain, and so pose a contamination threat as they erode over time; this risk is further increased by the effects of climate change. However, with the pressure to meet housing targets, it is now increasingly necessary to develop land on, or near, historic landfill sites.
This online Brownfield & Regeneration Network event will explore:
- The current regulatory challenges regarding developing landfills and possible ways forward
- Current risks from coastal landfills due to climate change and rising sea-levels causing coastal erosion
- Managing gas from former landfills
- Case studies of landfills being developed and brought back into beneficial use
