The Geosciences team has a strong Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) Group with the vision of maintaining a highly qualified and skilled risk assessment based support group that represents the forefront of current best practice and expertise, with continued commitment to learning and development and support for all RSK offices. The Geosciences team currently has several ASoBRA risk assessors, all of which provide risk assessment support to external clients across RSK UK and international teams, while undertaking more routine work in the field of land condition or wider environmental issues for our clients. A number of the QRA Group are actively involved in working groups which aim to raise the standard of land contamination risk assessment such as those established by SoBRA, EPS, Geological Society and AGS.

What you can expect in this position

We are looking for a suitably qualified and experienced risk assessor to join RSK Geosciences and support the QRA Group and/or work on groundwater engineering projects. The ideal candidate will have a background in hydrogeological and controlled waters risk assessments, with human health risk assessment experience also being beneficial. Working alongside an experienced team of risk assessors and hydrogeologists located across the UK, you will get involved with, and lead on a wide variety of geo-environmental land contamination and geotechnical projects including investigations in relation to development/ regeneration, energy, infrastructure, environmental permitting and Part IIA.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Designing, managing and leading on geo-environmental projects through PRA and site investigation phases, including GQRA and DQRA, with the production of high quality interpretive reports, in line with national standards, codes of practice and RSK procedures.  
  • Completion of DQRAs for controlled waters and potentially human health.
  • Management of groundwater studies including design and implementation of groundwater monitoring programs, interpreting in-situ aquifer test data (e.g. permeability tests) and completion of dewatering calculations.
  • Technical review of factual and interpretive geo-environmental reports.
  • Be an active member of the QRA team by actively promoting and encouraging best practice within the brownfield land sector and mentoring junior risk assessors. This may include producing in-house technical documents, facilitating training courses and presenting at external conferences.
  • Effectively communicating with clients (both external and within the wider RSK group) and colleagues to build strong working relationships with the aim of meeting and exceeding client expectations, and contributing to a strong team ethic
  • Managing projects to meet both commercial and technical requirements and working with technical and projects leads to deliver appropriate solutions wherever necessary
  • Supporting business development through managing the preparation of tenders.
  • Stewardship of health, safety and environment in accordance with company standards and contribute to sustainability goals

What we're looking for:

  • A professional with at least 10 years relevant work experience
  • Significant and demonstrable experience of site conceptualisation, developing and refinement of conceptual site models and undertaking generic quantitative risk assessments for controlled waters; plus potentially human health and ground gas
  • Demonstrable experience of undertaking DQRA for controlled waters using environmental simulation packages (e.g. RTM, ConSim, Aquifer Win32, Modflow, RBCA, etc)
  • Able to complete factual and interpretative assessments
  • Able to deliver projects and work within a multi-disciplinary consultancy
  • Able to write proposals that are both technically sound and commercially accurate
  • Provide strong technical leadership and mentoring skills to junior staff
  • Strong track record in managing time and resources effectively and within budget 
  • Computer literate and skilled with Microsoft Office applications, in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Full UK driving licence. 

Qualifications/ Certification

  • BSc degree level qualified in Geology, Geophysics, Earth Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering or a related subject
  • MSc in Hydrogeology or related subject
  • Chartered status with a relevant professional body e.g. Geological Society, IES
  • SoBRA accredited risk assessor (RSoBRA or ASoBRA) or willing to work towards accreditation in one or more disciplines (vapour, ground gas, human health, controlled waters)
  • Beneficial, but not essential, to be a SiLC and Suitably Qualified Person (SQP)
