More fill sought for Tyne Dock infill

The Sirius Group is seeking a further 250,000t of waste material to complete its infill work on the former Tyne Dock in South Shields which has already swallowed more than 1mt of fill including material from construction of the new Tyne Tunnel.

Now it is keen to identify local sources for the remaining infill needed for the project to release the former dock for commercial development.

"By using land excavated from the construction of the second Tyne Tunnel the Port eliminated almost 5,000 lorry movements through Jarrow, minimising the environmental impact," said Port of Tyne chief technical officer Brian Reeve.

"Once complete the infilling will create an additional 14 acres of operational land for Port of Tyne to develop and contribute towards enhancing the economic regeneration of North East England."
