A converted pumping station will feature prominently in a new brownfield Coventry housing project to relieve pressure on supply of new homes.
A Victorian pumping station in Coventry is set to form the centrepeice of a major brownfield housing project involving hundreds of new homes.
The derelict Whitley pumping station and associated land at London Road was acquired from Severn Trent by Homes England on 6 December in order to meet increased demand for homes due to the expansion of Coventry-based manufacturing businesses. The land had been the subject of a previous application by Severn Trent, which had been put on hold.
The move should accelerate the process of it being brought back into use. Homes England is already working with Coventry City Council on plans for its development to be consulted on in 2019, with a view to starting construction within 12 months of that date. Restoration and conversion to apartments of the historic 1893 Gothic Revival pumping station will be a key feature.
The housing development is needed to meet increased need for homes as Coventry-based manufacturing businesses expand, according to Coventry City Council.
Homes England added that good quality residential development and associated enhanced green infrastructure will also be of benefit to local communities.
