New life for former York gas works

Moda Living a private landlord and joint venture partner Apache Capital Partners, a real estate investment business have partnered with North Star to announce plans for major redevelopment on the site of York’s former gasworks that would deliver 700 new homes.
The 4ha site between Layerthorpe and Heworth Green has been standing derelict for
more than a decade. Many previous planning applications have failed.
As well as homes for rent and ownership, the project would include retail space, a café, more than 100 new trees, a neighbourhood park and more than 20,000 square feet of amenity space, including shared lounges, health and wellness zones, communal workspace and extensive roof gardens.
Developing the complex brownfield site would involve relocating a gas pipeline,
removing a redundant gas holder and remediating of contaminated land.
Designed by York-based DC Architecture the new community would re-connect existing surrounding neighbourhoods by adding extensive public realm around Eboracum Way and Heworth Green and introducing new pedestrian and cycle links.
Moda managing director Tony Brooks said the firm looked forward to providing high
quality homes for rent "within the wider regeneration of a derelict and neglected site".
The scheme would be Moda’s10th in the UK and second in Yorkshire, the other being
515 homes for rent in Leeds city centre.
A North Star spokesman said: "We would like talk to as many people as possible so we can get feedback from the community."
A public consultation will take place at the Ark/Trinity Methodist Church in Monkgate.
