Golder has been appointed by the leisure and entertainment construction firm, World Wheel Company, to provide environmental impact assessment services as part of a £100m, 32,000m² urban regeneration development in on the banks of the Tyne in Newcastle.

After completing an initial small-scale phase one geo-environmental assessment in the summer, Golder received the go ahead to begin work on the full EIA in late September 2018. Working alongside planning partner Lichfield and other subcontractors, Golder is responsible for assessing the project’s effect on air quality, noise, ecology, landscape, archaeology and land condition.

The team is working within a tight planning deadline, with the entire project set to be delivered in just a few months to facilitate its opening in 2020.

Dubbed ‘Giants on the Quayside’, plans for the site include sport and leisure facilities such as a virtual golf club, climbing wall, trampoline park, five-a-side football and tennis venues. The site will also include a food and beverage area, and a 140m observation wheel - taller than the London Eye.
