Diluted EU measures could harm waterways, says WWT

The conservation charity has warned that the EU’s Water Framework Directive, which will try to improve the quality of Europe’s water bodies by 2027, is under threat. It says the protective framework is being reviewed by the European Commission and claims "there is a strong lobby to try and weaken it".

Even with the UK leaving the EU, the WWT says that if Europe weakens its legislation on water quality, the UK is likely to do the same.

Furthermore, it notes that many of the UK’s wetland birds spend considerable amounts of time in Europe; as such, they are dependent on the quality of Europe’s wetlands, which it believes is under threat.

The WWT has urged people to comment on the European Commission’s consultation on the issue to safeguard the quality of the UK’s waterways.
