Justine Gray, Technical Services Manager, Galaxy Insulation

Justine is a Certificated Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing (CSSW) with 20 years construction industry experience from manufacturing in the ground gas and structural waterproofing arena to distribution of Groundwork Engineering materials. Justine’s main role is to provide complete thermal insulation solutions to ensure compliant, buildable, and available solutions.

Michael Jaggs, Associate Director & Principal Trainer, Building Research Establishment (BRE)

Mike is a construction engineer with over 30 years of radon experience, joining BRE in 1994 he has contributed to research and testing work resulting in the development of radon remedial measures for existing buildings and radon proactive measures in new buildings. Mike has also managed BRE’s airtightness and infrared thermography teams, testing many 100’s of buildings. For the last 10 years Mike has developed and delivered training programmes for the BRE Academy and delivers lectures to Hertfordshire University on their degree and Masters Civil Engineering and Construction Management courses.

Amy Juden, Associate, Environmental Protection Group

Amy is an Associate at The Environmental Protection Group Ltd where she specialises in ground gas risk assessment.  She is a Chartered Geologist and is enthusiastic about providing efficient and innovative risk assessment and remediation solutions for complex contamination problems. Amy has recently authored new ground gas guidance to be published by NHBC and serves as a judge for the Brownfield Briefing Awards.  She has been working in the geo-environmental industry for over ten years.

Matthew Lennard, Principal Geo-Environmental Engineer, NHBC

Matt Lennard is Principal Geo-Environmental Engineer for the NHBC.  Matt is a Chartered Geologist and ASoBRA accredited risk assessor (human health and vapour intrusion) with over 23 years experience in the contaminated land industry where he has worked for consultants, contractors and land-owners before joining NHBC in 2016.

Karen Thornton, Land Quality Service Manager, NHBC

Karen’s 30-year career has been around addressing challenges presented by Brownfield redevelopment and supporting the delivery of new homes, which are safe, of high quality, and in places where they are most needed.

Karen is the Manager of NHBC’s Land Quality Service. Offering early engagement with our team of Geotechnical and Geo-Environmental specialists for those looking to bring their sites to residential markets and requiring reassurance that their scheme will achieve acceptance against NHBC Land Quality Standards.

A Chartered Building Engineer, and CIWEM, Karen is well-regarded as being Steering Committee Member for various technical publications related to ground gases and VOCs.

Steve Wilson, Technical Director, Environmental Protection Group

Steve is a Chartered Engineer and Environmentalist with 30 years professional experience of geotechnical and environmental engineering. Steve has helped to shape much of the UK guidance on ground gas assessment and remediation.  He is widely recognised as a leading expert in ground gas and provides advice and designs for remediation schemes on sites around the world. He has successfully applied quantitative risk assessment to ground gas for both development and Part IIA sites over 20 years. He is co-author of the Local Authority Guide to Ground Gas and was a member of the drafting committee for British Standard BS8576 on ground gas investigation.

Steve was a member of the research team for a recently completed CIRIA project on the verification and integrity testing of gas protection systems. He also presents training courses on ground gas for the Chartered Institution of Environmental Health and CIRIA.
