UK-headquartered, global consulting firm BMT has joined AECOM, Arcadis, Atkins, Delta-Simons, ERM, Jacobs, Mott MacDonald, Ramboll, SLR, Sweco and WSP in an initiative enabling them to work collaboratively to harness the environmental and sustainability (E&S) consultancy sector’s potential to deliver sustainable change.

Environment Analyst established the Sustainability Delivery Group (SDG) in 2019 to help the sector communicate its role and its value, to clients and stakeholders, in addressing the existential challenges facing humanity from environmental degradation, climate change and biodiversity losses.

Since then the SDG has established working groups focussed on addressing some of the E&S consulting sector’s greatest challenges. These groups include the Future of ESG working group, a degree apprenticeship working group and the influential Early Career Advisory Board

Colleen Martin, environmental consultancy business lead at 1,300-strong BMT, said: "BMT are pleased to join the Sustainability Delivery Group as we are driven by our passion to create a sustainable and safe future for all, and which underpins the expertise we apply in science, technology and engineering."

"BMT joins the Sustainability Delivery Group at an exciting time as it continues to help the sustainability services sector develop its leadership position," said Environment Analyst’s managing director Ross Griffiths.

"Last month we established our Future of ESG Working Group to help our members navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by the widespread adoption of ESG-linked outcomes."

Over the coming year the SDG will support the publication of a Consultancy Net Zero & ESG Strategies report, outlining the climate targets and ESG focus of 50 professional services firms around the world. The Future of ESG Working Group will develop best practice guidance on how to define ESG, as it applies to the E&S sector. The Early Career Advisory Board will continue to advise SDG members on recruiting and retaining early career professionals within the sector.

The objectives of the Sustainability Delivery Group are:

  • To improve the value proposition of the environmental and sustainability consultancy industry
  • To drive forward the industry's leadership role in providing innovative solutions to mitigate the climate and biodiversity crises
  • To listen carefully to client sectors' needs and promote stakeholder dialogue with consultancy practice leaders

It also seeks to:

  • Inspire the next generation of environmental & sustainability business leaders
  • Promote diversity, equity and inclusion within the industry
  • Promote international business opportunities
  • Represent the whole E&S consulting sector, large and small, specialist and multidisciplinary
